Artist Statement

My work investigates the nature of value and it’s accretion. Through investment and collection the

works offer parallels between the world of global finance and the highly charged art market. Editions

of my alternative currency, Neutral Capital, first debuted with the Swiss Institute of Contemporary

Art at the 2005 Armory Show in New York. Neutral Capital bills are collaged by hand from unstable

global currencies bought at market value, then printed in limited editions. At the Armory, art

collectors bought attachés containing Neutral Capital and used it to shop at various participating

galleries thus creating a concurrent market and commodity. Neutral Capital functions both as art

and commerce - cohabitating in a territory where the distinction between the two blur. It addresses

the often changing parameters of value and the interchange of possibility that exists in all things

that experience fortune and decline.

Like art holdings from other well- known financial institutions such as CitiBank, UBS, and Deutsch

Bank - Neutral Capital has been using its surplus cash to acquire artworks for its own collection. The

collection is housed in a series of shipping crates that hinge and unbolt to open into refined compact

interiors with all the necessary attributes of other large galleries. Its collection includes work by an

international roster of artists with prominent works in all media. Recent developments include the

“Collector” milk crate edition, for a series that will incorporate a collection of objects from select

artist books, to super eight films, rare records, and ephemera. With adaptable utility Collector offers

a blank canvas for the creative act of collecting.
