MAKEOUT ROOM
Make Out Room, 2002. New York.
Built for Valentines Day 2002, Make Out Room is a portable battery operated plywood
structure with pink and red lights and a transistor radio. The Make Out Room results as a
generic type, memorializing our youth and radiance, petty crushes, first kisses, broken
hearts, shattered innocence, and masturbatory fantasies. New York’s Oldies, CBS FM plays
constantly from inside the booth, providing a random assortment of love songs from
Teenage Lover to Earth Angel. The music gives the piece a certain narrative element,
which it then embodies, mutating unpredictably from song to song. Make out room was
carted around New York City on Valentines Day 2002 as my way of creating a public
offering.
